Alaskan diary: A journey to find what we wanna ride.
written by Mitch
Just back from the Red Bull Verbier Xtreme and still hungover from all the partying, we drag ourselves away from our homebase in Innsbruck for a 5am flight from Munich to the Hawaii of snowboarding - Alaska. The combination of a hangover, not enough sleep and the thought of hours on a plane is compensated by the dream of steeps, deeps and, hopefully, the sickest runs of a snowboarder's lifetime about to come
05-04-01: After a night in the airport at Anchorage, we set ourselves up with a 29foot RV V10 with a 300 horsepower fat mama. Choosing the national scenic highway as our line to the ALYESKA RESORT (40 miles from Anchorage), we're focused on finally getting some pow under foot after spending forever on a plane. It's a nice resort that looks out across the ever-changing tidal waters of the Turnagain Arm, the weather is sweet and the sick AK terrain is calling out to us from just a short hike away. We're amping to get out there, except thatÖMichael, head ski patroller, is calling us back. He tells us repeatedly not to leave the resort boundary, which means there's no way to get amongst it without pissing off the friendly guys at the resort. Resort information: There are a couple of chairs (6) ,and a tram (gondola). The summit elevation is 3939', base elevation is 250'. The highest chair goes up to 2750' (chair 6). Average snowfall on top ,782"
